Believe it or not, most people rallied around OpenAI because of Sam. The fact that over 700 employees, including hundreds of researchers, were willing to walk away with Sam speaks to their belief that he was leading them in a direction they wanted to go. These individuals saw OpenAI as the ideal place to conduct their research, rather than a university or another big company.

Again, yes, technical geniuses can bring unique insights, but it is the people leaders who bring a team together and steer those insights toward greatness.

You’re Starving Your Staff Of Feedback

Lol had to use the word ‘staff’ because the Pun must pun 😂

Anyhoo, not-so-fun fact? The people you lead are sharing the horrible experiences they’ve had with you all over the internet. And here’s one that caught my attention;

“I had a manager who would refuse to give me ongoing feedback while I was working on something. I’d ask for it and she would say, “just show me when it’s done”.

I was in a co-op/learning position so it was terrifying to think I’d be going in the wrong direction only to find out at the end. I am the kind of person who needs constant feedback loops to feel confident that the work I’m doing is not only what’s expected of me, but that it’s great. My manager constantly refused to give me the feedback I needed when I asked.”

I can relate though. Imagine the frustration of spending weeks on a project only to have that work rendered useless because your team lead didn’t sync up with you at the right time.
