Tech Bros & Sis, We're all in a Marriage of Convenience

If you’re a Nollywood freak like me, you might be familiar with the marriage of convenience theme filmmakers have shoved down our throats in past years.

A marriage is arranged between a man and a woman; just so the woman can give her mother-in-law grandchildren, and the man can cover his black tax from his in-laws. And what is it they say about movies being a reflection of reality? I have heard stories of arranged marriages between men abroad and ladies in Nigeria, set up for mutual benefits. 

Why am I talking about marriage shenanigans on CareerBuddy’s blog?

If you ask me, I think the relationship between many young people and tech is that of a marriage of convenience. 

Be honest! You didn't want to be a Tech Bro/Sis from the start

Tech is the new craze. Entrepreneurs and innovators are creating startups (no one really says “I’m starting a business” anymore). Workers are looking for roles in tech (either they have to do deep tech stuff or not). Education and learning are wearing a new look because tech is what everyone is tilting to. And it’s super flexible; you can have theoretical mastery within months, and you don’t have to bag a degree to fill a role in tech. But beneath all of these, I don't think many of us started out in life with an affection for coding, Fintech, or all that stuff. 

Imagine that popular conversation we all had during childhood in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s: What do you want to do when you grow up? You: I want to code!

How awkward it would have been

But tech brings the money, and that’s why we're in it. If tomorrow, plucking leaves is the "new oil", there's a high chance we would all ditch tech and migrate again. And talking about oil; in such Nollywood flicks, oil would be that innocent ex who we all ditched for the happening babe. However, this is real life, and there is no karma coming to catch up with us for betraying a first love. 

Tech is the new web for relevance

Tech is also the future, and it’s only wise that we endeavor to find a role there. The world is going digital, and this is not abstract; it’s real. Communication, the most basic human activity, has gone overtly digital. Even daily activities are becoming powered by tech or carried out within the digital space. So, the rapid trend of young people building careers in tech is justifiable. 

And if this is indeed some marriage of convenience thingy, then I think it’s allowed to put on some Yoruba demon skin and ditch whatever isn’t bringing the money for tech

There's a place in Tech for everyone
