In July 2026, Bluewave New Energy in Ikeja advertised a full-time AI Customer Service Training Officer role. The requirements: a diploma or degree in any discipline, basic familiarity with ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude, and good documentation habits. Python? "An advantage but not required."

That advert answers the question most of you keep asking us. Yes, there are AI jobs without coding, and we count at least nine kinds that African employers and global AI companies are hiring for right now. In South Africa, Pnet found that roles needing AI skills grew 488% in six years, against 252% for specialist AI roles, and overtook them in the first half of 2025. The work is moving into ordinary jobs. Here is where, what each pays when we could verify it, and how a non-coder gets in.

Why non technical AI jobs are growing faster than engineering ones

Pnet's August 2025 job market report, covered by Daily Investor, split the market in two. "AI jobs" design, build and train models. "AI-skilled jobs" are traditional roles that expect you to use AI tools well. Over three years, the first group grew 31%. The second grew 151%.

Pnet's own line: "AI is no longer confined to specialist positions." Gauteng held 58% of the AI vacancies, Western Cape 24%.

Nigeria and Kenya publish less data, but the job adverts tell the same story. Once a company buys ChatGPT or Claude seats for 500 staff, it needs people who can make those tools give correct answers, check the output, write the policies and sell the product. None of that starts with a programming language.

The 9 AI jobs without coding (with real 2026 postings)

    9 AI jobs without coding

    1. AI trainer and evaluator (domain expert)

AI labs pay professionals to write test questions, grade model answers and build scoring rubrics in their field. On Kenyan job boards this year, micro1 posted AI trainer roles for finance experts, logistics specialists, labour relations specialists and even front desk receptionists. Its guide to AI training jobs (May 2026) lists pay from $15–$40 an hour for general annotation up to $50–$100 for domain review, paid in USD, and says most roles need no computer science degree. Our full breakdown is in AI training jobs in Africa.

    2. AI trainer for African languages

Your Yoruba, Hausa, Swahili or isiZulu is a skill AI companies cannot buy from Silicon Valley. In May 2026, RWS posted a 100% remote, freelance AI Data Specialist – Yoruba role: native Yoruba, strong English, tagging and comparing audio, video and text. The listing showed "8 USD" without saying per what, so treat that number with care. RWS ran a Swahili version too. This is entry-level money, but it is dollars and it builds a track record.

    3. AI operations and automation specialist

These people wire AI into daily work: chatbots that answer customers, automations that move data between tools, knowledge bases the AI reads from. The Bluewave role above is the entry point. At the top end sits M-KOPA, which advertised an AI Operations Lead in Nairobi in March 2026 to run the AI tooling for more than 2,500 employees.

Be honest with yourself about the gap. M-KOPA asked for hands-on experience building agents with frameworks such as LangChain, MCP or Google ADK, plus scripting. You can start this path with Zapier or n8n and no code. You will not lead it without learning some.

    4. AI product manager and product ops

Product managers decide what gets built and why. AI product teams want PMs who use AI daily. Umba's Senior Product Manager (AI-Native) role in Nairobi, posted September 2026, asked for five years in fintech product work, SQL "or willingness to learn quickly" and daily use of Claude Code. It also wanted someone comfortable enough to "ship a small PR with Claude Code". That is AI-assisted coding, not a computer science degree. ALX's June 2026 salary roundup puts senior AI PMs at $35,000–$90,000 a year; locally, CareerBuddy's product manager salary guide for Nigeria puts mid-level PMs at ₦300,000–₦600,000 a month.

    5. AI content editor and quality reviewer

Companies now produce ten times more content with AI, and somebody has to catch the errors before customers do. Misters of Nigeria advertised an AI Content Specialist to create images, video concepts and copy with generative tools, then curate the output to brand standards. The requirement was a portfolio of AI-assisted creative work, not a degree. Editors, copywriters and designers fit here.

    6. AI implementation and customer success

An AI product is useless until a client's staff use it. Intent HQ, a data and AI platform, is hiring a Client Success Manager, South Africa for Cape Town and Johannesburg to run onboarding, training and business reviews for banks, telcos and retailers. No programming listed. It does want ten-plus years client-facing in analytics, CRM or marketing tech, so this is a senior switch, not a first job.

    7. AI sales and solutions

AI companies entering Africa need people who already know the buyers. In August 2026, Robert Walters advertised a Sales & Go-to-Market Professional for "a fast growing AI company" expanding into Anglophone West Africa, hybrid in Lagos, open to candidates in Nigeria or Ghana. The ask: enterprise B2B deals closed, a network of C-level buyers in banking or telecoms. Its technical cousin, the forward deployed engineer, does write production code. The sales seat does not.

    8. AI policy, governance and ethics

Regulation is creating jobs for lawyers, compliance officers and auditors. On 14 October 2026, Samaha Consulting posted an AI Governance Manager role in Johannesburg: write AI policies, assess systems for bias, map them against POPIA, Nigeria's NDPC rules, GDPR and the EU AI Act. It asks for 8+ years in risk, privacy, compliance or audit. No coding. For graduates, Policy Vault in Abuja ran an AI and Emerging Technology Policy Fellowship in 2025 with a ₦350,000 monthly stipend.

    9. AI-skilled versions of your current job

This is the biggest category by far, and the one Pnet's data points to. Renmoney's Lagos Product Marketing Manager advert listed "hands-on experience or clear comfort using AI tools in daily work" as a required skill, with an estimated ₦15 million to ₦25 million a year. Marketing, HR and finance adverts increasingly read the same way. The title does not change. The shortlist does.

The turn: prompt engineer jobs in Africa mostly do not exist

In 2023, "prompt engineer" was the job everyone wanted. It faded fast. Fortune reported in May 2025 that Indeed searches for prompt engineering roles peaked in April 2023, and quoted Indeed economist Allison Shrivastava: "Prompt engineering as a skill is still definitely a good thing to have, but it's not an entire title."

We see the same in Lagos and Nairobi. We rarely see "Prompt Engineer" as a standalone title. We see prompting buried inside other roles: Bluewave asks its AI trainer to "design, test and refine prompts". So if a Selar course promises you a ₦2 million prompt engineer job, omo, run. Learn prompting as one tool, then attach it to a job that already exists.

"No coding" does not mean "no skill". Every job on this list pays you for judgment you built somewhere else: in a bank, a classroom, a newsroom or a sales floor. The fresh graduate with a ChatGPT certificate and no domain is the person these roles filter out first. Feel free to oppose me in the comments.

How to get into AI operations jobs and AI trainer jobs without a tech degree

Build a portfolio of AI-assisted work

Recruiters cannot see "proficient in ChatGPT". They can see proof. Pick three pieces of work from your own field and document each: the problem, the tool, your prompts, what the AI got wrong, and the result.

    • An HR officer: a 40-question screening rubric built with Claude, with notes on the three questions the AI wrote badly and how you fixed them.

    • A customer service lead: a 50-entry FAQ knowledge base fed into a free chatbot, with before-and-after answer accuracy on 20 real customer questions.

    • An accountant: a month-end reconciliation checklist automated in Zapier, with the hours saved written down.

Put each one in a Google Doc or Notion page with a public link. If you need structure first, our list of free AI courses with certificates covers the basics in a few weekends.

Show it on your CV and LinkedIn

On your CV, write AI into the bullet that describes the result, not into a skills list. "Cut weekly report time from 6 hours to 90 minutes using ChatGPT and a Google Sheets template" beats "AI tools: ChatGPT, Gemini". Our guide on how to write a CV that gets you shortlisted shows the format recruiters scan for.

On LinkedIn, add the portfolio links to your Featured section, and change your headline from "Customer Service Professional" to something like "Customer Service Lead | AI chatbot and knowledge base setup". Recruiters search by keyword. Our LinkedIn optimisation guide for African professionals covers the rest.

Pick the role closest to your current job

The shortest route is sideways, not a full reset. A lawyer moves to AI governance. A teacher moves to AI training. A sales manager moves to AI sales. If you do want the full switch into tech, read how to switch into tech from a non-tech background first, so sapa does not catch you halfway. For the engineering side of the market, see our AI jobs in Africa 2026 report.

When your portfolio has three pieces, start applying. We post live roles, including AI-skilled ones, on the CareerBuddy job board.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I get AI jobs without coding in Nigeria?

Yes. Lagos employers are already advertising them: Bluewave's AI Customer Service Training Officer accepts any degree, and Renmoney lists AI tool use as a required skill for product marketing. Remote AI trainer platforms also accept Nigerian professionals with domain expertise.

What non technical AI jobs pay in dollars?

AI training and evaluation work pays in USD. micro1's May 2026 guide lists $15–$40 an hour for general annotation and $50–$100 for domain-specific review. African language data work also pays in dollars but at lower rates.

Is prompt engineering still a job in 2026?

Rarely as a standalone title. Indeed searches for prompt engineering roles peaked in April 2023, and its economist calls it a skill, not a title. Learn it, then list it inside a real role such as AI operations or content.

    What are AI operations jobs?

AI operations staff set up and maintain the AI tools a company uses: chatbots, knowledge bases and workflow automations. Entry roles can be no-code. Senior roles like M-KOPA's AI Operations Lead expect scripting and agent-building experience.

Do I need a certificate to get AI trainer jobs?

Usually not. AI trainer platforms test your subject knowledge and writing through an assessment or interview. A free certificate helps your LinkedIn, but your degree, licence or years in the field matter more.

This week: pick one task you do every Monday, do it with ChatGPT or Claude, and write down what it got right, what it got wrong and how long it saved. That is portfolio piece number one. Abeg, publish it before Friday.
