THE BIG IDEA
Expansion Could Be Your Best Move
In a recent interview, Odunayo Eweniyi, the co-founder of PiggyVest, a prominent Nigerian fintech startup, shed light on why African startups may not necessarily need to expand across the continent. Her perspective holds valuable lessons for you.
Eweniyi emphasized that while PiggyVest has achieved immense success in Nigeria, it might not always be possible to copy its fintech products in other African countries.
Eweniyi pointed out that despite considering expansion, the company recognizes the unique challenges posed by different African markets. E.g slower product adoption rates in certain countries and the complexities of scaling digital savings products which could hinder successful expansion efforts.
Instead of limiting expansion to neighbouring African countries, Eweniyi stated the importance of leveraging the conditions that led to PiggyVest's success in Nigeria to explore opportunities in other global markets like Thailand, Brazil, Mexico, Ethiopia, or South Africa.
Regarding growth metrics, Eweniyi highlighted PiggyVest's strategy of continuously enhancing its product offerings to cater to diverse demographics and financial needs. The company has evolved beyond serving solely young people to include broader customer segments interested in wealth management and investment opportunities.
In pursuit of growth, PiggyVest draws its inspiration from global fintech leaders such as Ant Group, Wealthsimple, and Onyx.
Considering the potential benefits of venturing into non-African markets, and knowing that your products and services may find greater acceptance and success. Do you believe the grass is greener outside Africa? Go ahead and share your thoughts.
