QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"We want solutions, but what we really need are attitudes.
You don't need abs, but rather an attitude of training. You don't need the answer, but rather an attitude of curiosity. You don't need an easier life, but rather an attitude of perseverance.
Attitude precedes outcome."
James Clear, Author Atomic Habits.
Driving Great Outcomes with Micro Effort
Been reading 3-2-1 Thursday by James Clear for about 2 months now and it’s one newsletter I’d recommend for leaders. It’s short, straight to the point and as the writer’s name - clear.
Today’s quote got me wondering how I could quit the hamster wheel of chasing never ending KPIs on my team.
As an obsessively organized person, I try my best to create systems around every single thing in my life and at work and my goal is pretty simple - to save time, energy, and resources while pulling off the best results.
But systems require discipline- a truck shipload of it and “sometimes” we just want to indulge.
This period has been that “sometimes” for me, and God knows it has been a struggle. The pressure to have results outweigh the drive to get those results and once that balance is lost…
…well let’s remain positive 😌
When you’re at such a “point” in your pursuit as a leader, it affects your entire team - it begins to seem like everyone is dragging and the outcomes you envision are slowly turning into a mirage.
Have you seen Transformers: Rise of the Beasts by the way?🙃 Mirage remains my best character! 😁
So back to what we were saying;
How do you stir up a positive work attitude in yourself and in your team to drive desired outcomes?
1. Revisit your why
Why did you start your company? Why did you choose this path?
And by your “why”, I don’t mean the gap you are trying to bridge or the problem you’re trying to solve with whatever product or service you offer.
I mean the real reason you started-
90% of the time (as with most startup stories), your “why” is tied to an experience. Either an event that prompted you to make a resolution or an aspiration that has been your dream since you were younger.
Taking a stroll down that memory lane with your team helps you to stir the same emotions you felt that very day you made your decision. You could even get goosebumps if you’re like me, but the point I’m trying to make is that this exercise helps you refuel your passion, and passion can be contagious, it would spread to your team.
2. Start owning outcomes
Once everyone is charged with a renewed spirit, delegate outcomes - not tasks.
Tasks are easy to execute but outcomes mean impact and this creates a sense of accomplishment.
Sending this newsletter to you is a task. But emotionally connecting with you such that you find it valuable enough to take action is an outcome - that is why I am very intentional about what I write.
3. Finally, reward outcomes
You probably already know this but I’m just going to reemphasize it.
People work for money but go the extra mile for recognition, praise and rewards. Brains, like hearts, go where they are appreciated. Robert McNamara & Dale Carnegie
I have to put out a disclaimer though; these tips wouldn’t work if you have not been a really good boss. And as Doug Conant rightly said, “To win in the marketplace you must first win in the workplace.”
The end… of the first section of today’s newsletter 😊
I hope you enjoyed this piece. I’d love to hear from you, so please spare a moment to share your feedback with me.
