Hello, Buddy!

“Work two remote jobs, reach financial freedom.”

That’s the mantra of an interesting community I just read about – with over 300,000 members on Discord and Reddit. They pretty much share tips and celebrate their successes as ‘’overemployed’’ people.

And what does that even mean?

So, this community of professionals coined the term ‘over-employed’ (OE) which essentially means when someone works more than one full-time job at the same time.

People who are part of the online forum and consider themselves “OE” rank each of their jobs by the priority they place on it. “J1” is the favorite, referring to the job they’ll prioritize before the others. J2 is the backup, J3 is the backup of the backup, and so on. They use other acronyms like TC (total compensation) and HPW (hours worked per week on each job) too. The trick is to maximize your TC while minimizing your HPW.

Lol I’m not even sure which I find more fascinating – the fact that this community exists or their interesting mantra!

But again, where’s the lie?

Earlier this week, Business Insider reported on a guy working three full-time jobs at Meta, IBM, and Tinder, without his bosses knowing and I’m like broooooo! Howwwww?

But omo, I can’t even blame him considering the way companies are moving mad these days with layoffs. It only makes sense more than ever to have a safety net.

Am I saying you should cheat on your boss or become a polygamous employee?

Well, maybe. Maybe not.

All I’ll continue to say is, in this era, blind loyalty to an organization doesn’t always pay off. Many bosses, of course, would argue that they’re paying you to work full-time. If you get your work done quickly, the traditional expectation is that you let them know you’re available to take on more tasks. You owe it to your company to put in the hours you’re being paid for — all of them.

But that’s exactly what these ‘over-employed’ guys used to do back in the days as career monogamists.

And what did they get in return? Disappointing raises that were swallowed by inflation. Unfulfilled promises of promotions. Abrupt layoffs via a single email without any warning.

Again and again, YOUR LOYALTY SHOULD ALWAYS BE FIRST TO YOURSELF AND YOUR PURPOSE.

Now before you rush and carry 50 jobs on your shoulders, I think you need to ask yourself some questions;

  1. Does your work schedule allow it? For one, the odds are stacked against you if you work on-site, especially if the jobs you’re trying to juggle love meetings more than getting the job done.

  2. Will the quality of your work remain top-notch? Truth is, some bosses have gotten to the point where they don’t care about other commitments an employee has, as long as the work they’re getting from the employee is first-rate. But it’s very important that you don’t bite more than you can chew. No employer deserves poor-quality work just because you decided to be a polygamous worker.

  3. Are you ready for potential burnout? Taking on a second job can certainly bring concerns about burnout and dividing attention from your primary role. If you struggle with time management, it might be best to shelve the idea for now.

  4. What’s the goal? Why do you want to take up another job? Is it because you want to make more money? Do you have extra time on your hands? Or are you simply trying to ‘layoff-proof’ your career?

In the end, do what works for you. If you can take on an extra job, why not?

And if your boss isn’t cool with it, you can always join the ‘overemployed’ community to get tips to help you evade detection 😂

What are your thoughts on this though? Are you Team ‘Plan Bs are necessary’ or Team ‘I’m committed to my one and only’?
