Hmmm! Before you cut my head off, I didn’t say that o…Kim Kardashian did.
Omo! #BreakTheBias in the mud o😂. That’s how the Kardashians started trending last week for their double standards on work and men. And looks like she got a lot of people triggered so bad I can sense that even the ancestors are angry.
If you don’t know the statement I’m talking about, Click here to catch up, then come back to finish this gist.
Remember this song by Yinka Ayefele that says, ”When you become successful, don’t call your bestie a lazy person”? That’s the summary of what Kim did. Kim’s statement for me just goes to show how a lot of privileged people find it so easy to critique others.
Is being privileged a bad thing? Of course not! I mean, I sometimes ask myself why I wasn’t born North West or at least as Otedola’s daughter? I don’t think the problem is being privileged. The problem is being tone-deaf to the realities of others around you. The problem is using a different yardstick for yourself versus others.
As a boss or employer, it’s looking down on employees who break their backs daily to build revenue for your business, and then at the slightest discomfort or provocation, you call them “lazy” or “Disloyal” ‘cos they asked for a raise or took their leave days.
As a person, it’s looking down on your friends who are still job searching or earning less than you and making them feel like they are lazy ‘cos you got a job that pays you 7 figures as your first-ever job straight out of school.
There’s nothing wrong with privilege. But there’s something wrong with telling your friend who earns 80k per month with her Legedis-Benz that “Ah! I can’t do that kind of your job oh”, “You are suffering o!” but you’ve got Millions in a trust fund and your Dad is Dangote’s bestie.
Fam, read the room, own your bias, and show empathy. Open your eyes and learn to see the world beyond the lens of your privileges. If you cannot use your privilege to lift people, then at least, respect their hustle.
hasta la vista!
