Hey, Workie!

I need to know what your thoughts are on asking people how much they earn? When did pocket watching become so rampant??

I recently watched someone ask a friend of mine how much her father earns and I’m just wondering where some people are plucking this audacity from? Or maybe I’m overreacting.

P.S. This newsletter is for undergraduates and newbies in the corporate space. Know anyone who fit this description? Please share with them

CORPORATE BANTS

Say NO To Pocket Watching!

These days pay transparency is becoming a really big thing, and as much as I love the shift in corporate culture I’ve noticed it’s led to a bit of an issue. While well-intentioned, it has inadvertently created a culture of excessive salary comparison.

While it's always good to have information about compensation, fixating on how much other people earn can lead to unnecessary stress, anxiety, or even beef and jealousy.

It's important to recognize that individual career trajectories are diverse. Factors like experience, education, industry, location, and even personal choices can significantly impact how much someone earns.

Comparing your salary to that of a colleague who’s been in the field for ten years, has advanced degrees, or works in a high-paying industry definitely does not provide a realistic benchmark for yourself.

Instead of focusing on relative earnings, it's more productive to concentrate on your own career goals and aspirations. Set clear objectives, develop a personalized growth plan, and seek opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge. By doing so, you'll be better positioned to achieve financial success on your terms.

FROM A THOUGHT LEADER

How I built a personal brand on LinkedIn as a student to 42,000 followers in a few years.

I got on LinkedIn when I was in 200 level, at first I was very oblivious to how things worked on LinkedIn but after a while I did something, and I’d be sharing with you how I finally built a solid personal brand on LinkedIn.

I got to understand first that in this modern age, personal branding has become a crucial aspect of professional development and LinkedIn stands as a vital platform for cultivating a strong professional identity.

For example, before diving all straight into LinkedIn, you need to understand your brand. Understanding your brand in this context is simply knowing that you need to find a niche. A personal brand without a niche is like a student in a university without a department. Take a minute to think about that. 😅

Optimizing your LinkedIn profile would give you an edge and would make you understand how important it is to have a personal brand because an optimized profile attracts clients in all sectors. The first job I got on LinkedIn was as a result of the optimized profile that I built and I’ve been able to get more subsequently.

I’ve also been able to build my personal brand to a point where LinkedIn Headquarters could find me worthy to be the only student in Nigeria with a LinkedIn Top Voice Blue Badge which is only given to 300 creators yearly and I was part of the three Nigerians awarded for 2024.
