Handling Painful Resignations
A few months ago, one of the C-Suite executives in a fast-growing startup in Africa stepped down and tendered his resignation. He was great at his job, helped the company achieve amazing feats and it was not so easy letting him go.
I always wondered how the CEO, who was his really close friend felt. I was present at the farewell event organized for him and even the toughest team member got teary - he was that special.
I didn’t plan on writing about this today. Well, not until I saw a LinkedIn post from one of my ex-managers, she got a ton of farewell gifts from her team members (now ex-team members). I was quite surprised because she literally built the Product Marketing team at that company. Her impact was palpable from my first day working there and she was a mentor to every single person on that team - yes, she was that special too.
But then, companies are not cages and your employees will not remain with you forever. Even the biggest companies we learn from and try to emulate have had their fair share of heartbreaks.
In June 2022, when Sheryl Sandberg resigned from Facebook (now Meta), these were the words of Mark Zuckerberg;
It's the end of an era. After 14 years, my good friend and partner Sheryl Sandberg is stepping down as COO of Meta.
When Sheryl joined me in 2008, I was only 23 years old and I barely knew anything about running a company. We'd built a great product -- the Facebook website -- but we didn't yet have a profitable business and we were struggling to transition from a small startup to a real organization. Sheryl architected our ads business, hired great people, forged our management culture, and taught me how to run a company. She created opportunities for millions of people around the world, and she deserves the credit for so much of what Meta is today.
It's unusual for a business partnership like ours to last so long. I think ours did because Sheryl is such an amazing person, leader, partner, and friend. She cares deeply about the people in her life and she is generous about nurturing relationships and helping you grow as a person…
I'm sad that the day is coming when I won't get to work as closely with Sheryl. But more than anything, I'm grateful for everything she has done to build Meta. She has done so much for me, for our community, and for the world -- and we're all better off for it.
I would have loved to offer my usual recommendations for dealing with a situation like this but in this case, the only glue I found for fixing a broken heart is - Time.
However, I do have a lesson to share that you’d definitely find helpful when managing team members who seem indispensable, here you go: How to Eliminate Single Points of Failure

Remote Onboarding Made Easy
Onboarding remote employees can be a challenging task because the lack of physical proximity switches things up a little.
Although you can’t meet new employees in person to provide an in-person experience, this article will show you things you can do to bridge the communication gap, foster connection and create an overall pleasant onboarding experience for you and the employee(s).

FROM THE LEADER’S LIBRARY
3 Steps to Get Succession Planning Right
Leaders who cling too tightly to their position have an unfounded belief that only they can guide the company into the future.
This belief is delusion at best and an appalling lack of leadership at worst. It's your job as a leader to build a team of people around you who are more intelligent, innovative, and capable than you are. It's not a badge of honour to believe you are the hero of your organization; it's a dereliction of your most important duty.
