It is the dream of every leader, to have a team of highly effective people. Individuals who easily morph into their roles and do not need to be told every single time what to do. Who can give and receive feedback constructively and consciously improve on themselves to increase the value they bring to your organization.

This kind of people do exist, and I can say this confidently having worked with an entire team like this firsthand where no one is lagging behind and everyone is a major contributor.

But finding such people begins with your hiring process and today's edition will cover the key qualities you should look out for when looking to add highly effective people to your team.

Hiring Highly Effective People

Different people apply personal effectiveness in their lives in different ways. This depends on their individual goals and aptitudes. Nevertheless, individuals who possess commendable personal effectiveness tend to exhibit shared characteristics, which can be easily identified when you know what you’re looking for in your team.

What are these characteristics and how can you identify them?

  1. Self-awareness

Self-awareness encompasses the capacity to comprehend one's own personality, values, emotions, and motivations.

People who are self-aware tend to be more confident because they have a better understanding of themselves and their abilities, strengths and limitations. They can
identify what they are good at, which of their skills are the most valuable, and what situations they work best in, all of which lead to greater success in a variety of contexts.

You can easily gauge a candidate’s level of self-awareness by asking these questions.

  1. Resilience

Resolute individuals exhibit unwavering determination and tenacity in their pursuit of success, refusing to allow obstacles to impede their progress. Rather than being deterred by challenges, they employ inventive approaches to problem-solving and maintain an unwavering focus on their ultimate objective, which fuels their motivation to persevere.

These questions are great for testing for determination during a candidate’s interview.

  1. Time Management

I don’t think the definition of effectiveness will be complete without time management. This is the capacity to meticulously plan and execute tasks, be it within a team, project, or individual pursuits.

Proficient time management skills form a crucial component of effective planning, enabling the creation of precise and attainable objectives while ensuring the timely completion of tasks.

You will find these questions really helpful in accessing time management during your company’s interview process.

FROM THE LEADER’S LIBRARY

Why You Probably Should Stop Listening to Elon Musk

Some years ago, Elon Musk encouraged Tesla employees to bail on certain meetings. "Walk out of a meeting or drop off a call as soon as it is obvious you aren't adding value," he wrote in an email to all Tesla employees. "It is not rude to leave, it is rude to make someone stay and waste their time."

Feeling free to walk out of a meeting if you're not adding value? Sounds awesome. Maybe that's one of the reasons Tesla is a nearly $900 billion company.

Or not.
