Hey, Workie!

So, not to be a fear monger or anything, but I hear being posted to Bauchi for NYSC is like being sent to war, and I didn’t believe it till I saw this insane video, and now I’m literally quacking in my boots.

If you’ve been posted there, I’m sending you thoughts and prayers because it’s clearly not for the faint hearted.

Would you go if you were posted there?

P.S. This newsletter is for undergraduates and newbies in the corporate space. Know anyone who fit this description? Please share with them

CORPORATE BANTS

Where Do You Stand On Lying Professionally?

There are a lot of contrasting views on whether or not it’s acceptable to lie on things like your LinkedIn or your CV, and honestly, you probably shouldn’t be putting ridiculous lies on your professional documents, regardless of whether you need to make them look better or not.

Now, this might sound a little discouraging if you’re desperately looking for ways to make yourself seem better suited for a position, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Thinking about lying on your CV isn’t anything strange, as 51% of people say they’ve lied about their experience and 38% of people have lied about their skills, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right way to go, even though it may seem tempting, especially as a corporate rookie.

There’s a fine line between adding some embellishments to your resume and telling so many lies that your pants instantly catch fire, and the key is understanding this line.

Some safe embellishments include (DO NOT DISREGARD THE, WITHIN REASON!):

  • Tweaking your job title (within reason): You could change your job title from “Freelance Writer” to something more specific like “SEO Writer”.
  • Rounding up figures (within reason): If you closed 14,500 deals, you could round it up to 15,000. Don’t do 10,000 and say you’re rounding up by making your figure 50,000! That’s sure to set your pants ablaze!
  • Rounding up job duration (within reason): Rounding up how long you worked somewhere by a month or so isn’t really a big deal, but don’t come and start claiming you worked somewhere for 1 year when you only lasted a month there.

Outside of these little embellishments, lying about your qualifications is a big no-no and it’s definitely something you should try to avoid. If you find yourself being tempted to lie about massive things like your educational background, your previous work experience, or your skills, just remember that lying about things like that could ruin your professional reputation and hinder you from getting future opportunities.
