Do you have questions about the key performance indicators (KPIs) of the role, the activities you will be doing daily, or if they send care packages to female employees monthly? The interview is your chance to ask these questions, learn more about the company and express your interest in the role.
Here are 15 unique questions to ask your potential employer during an interview to position yourself as someone enthusiastic about the role and keen on deciding if it is the right fit for you.
What are the day-to-day responsibilities of this role?
Show your enthusiasm for the role by asking about the intricate tasks to be performed. Asking this question provides more information about the role and the skills and experience needed to thrive. The response you get will also allow you to assess if you are a good fit.
What are the metrics for success in this role, and when will my performance be appraised?
Find out the KPIs and how and when they are measured.
What are your expectations during the first three months in this position?
It’s bad enough you have to work for money, so adding confusing deliverables is a no. Have a clear idea of what is expected of you after onboarding and adjusting to the role. This question also shows your willingness to join the company and play your part.
Do opportunities exist for continuous professional development and training?
You want to know if opportunities for career advancement exist in the company and show your commitment to the company in the long term.
Are there opportunities for progression and promotion within the company?
Before you go from intern to senior intern, ask about growth opportunities and the path for employees in the role. This question shows your commitment to the role and plans for the future.
How often are employees promoted?
You do not want to be stuck in the same role for years. This question displays your desire to advance in your career and climb through the ranks.
What is the working culture like in this company?
You need to determine if the company is a good fit for you. What is their stance on mental health and employee wellbeing? Is work-life balance a foreign term to them? How does this affect brunch with the girls? How often are they dragged on Twitter?
What do you enjoy most about working at this company?
The summary of this question is- Please, help my life. Should I stay, or should I go?
Where do you see the company headed in five years?
Job security is key to finding out if the bus is going somewhere or if you should come down at the next bus stop.
Can you give more details about the team I will be working closely with?
Do a little amebo and find out about the structure and the chain of command, so you know who to research (stalk) on Linkedin.
What is the biggest challenge the department is facing?
A problem shared is a problem half solved. Find out so you will know how to help.
What is the company’s leadership style?
They do not shout at people in your family, so you should find out early.
Is this a new position? If it is not, why did the previous employee leave?
Why are they running? Why are they running?
Is there anything about my qualifications or experience that makes you hesitant about me being a good fit?
We both know you are the GOAT, but find out if there are any weak spots you need to discuss.
What are the next steps in the recruitment process?
Ask this before they ghost you for six months.
