Widespread System Crashes
What you can as well call the ‘worst cyber event in history’ took place last week.
Nobody saw it coming; CrowdStrike, a widely used security firm, accidentally sent out an update that caused 8.5 million Windows computers to crash all over the world.
It affected airports, banks, grocery stores, police stations, Formula One racing teams…name it.
Sky News presenters were forced to read from sheets of paper, 911 emergency services in hospitals were affected and flights across the world were either severely delayed or canceled altogether. Overall, the global outage will cost US Fortune 500 companies $5.4bn.
Given the extent of the damage, this wasn't a quick fix. Every single impacted machine and host had to be fixed one by one. It took 4 days after the initial outage for most systems to be restored while others may take months to recover.
“When we use all the same vendors, then these sorts of things can become more pronounced when they do happen,” said Dominic Sellitto, clinical assistant professor of management science and systems at the University at Buffalo School of Management in New York.

In addition, Microsoft released a new recovery tool to help with Crowdstrike issue impacting Windows endpoints.
Soon, the CrowdStrike incident will likely become a story told over cups of coffee but, the lessons learned will influence how companies prepare for cyber threats.
