4-Day Work-week; Pros and Cons

Dubia is a great place to visit. It has serene scenery and plenty of glamour. Guess what Dubai also has?

A 4-day work week. Yes, people are about to start working for just four days in Dubai. When I say people, I mean government officials.

According to The National News, the Dubai Government Human Resources Department is trying out a 4-day work week from August 12 to September 30, while attempting to measure the increased productivity and impact on employee satisfaction.

They won’t be the first country to do this. Their next-door neighbour, Sharjah has implemented a 4-day work week as far back as January 1st 2022 with the people in the emirates emphasizing how happier they are after the implementation of this unique policy.

A 4-day workweek sounds exciting on paper, but what are the pros and cons?

To start with, a 4-day workweek can be of two types; compressed and reduced.

  • The condensed means the staff still work 40 hours but do it in four days instead, while the reduced means that the staff work 32 hours (or 36 in some cases) as against the minimum stipulation of 40 hours. Startups left the group chat.

The advantages of this are obvious; a better work-life balance, improved employee satisfaction, an aggregated Employee Value proposition, and lots more.

However there are a few cons like meeting scheduling as you now do more meetings in lesser time, and additional stress during the on days due to work anticipation.
