Hey, Workie!

So, over the week, I really got into this YouTube channel called Cruise, and saying it’s funny would be the understatement of the century, but the one video that really stuck out to me was the Gen Z vs. Elders video because it was almost a dead ringer for what it’s like in a typical Nigerian office.

CORPORATE BANTS

Is The Problem Your Age?

I love being young; if I had my way, I’d stay this age forever, but that doesn’t mean that being young doesn’t come with its fair share of challenges, especially when it comes to ageism in the workplace.

Apparently, ⅓ of hiring managers have admitted to avoiding hiring Gen-Z candidates because they don’t think we have professional or interpersonal skills, which is simply ridiculous, but there’s no use arguing with closed-minded people.

Entering the Nigerian workforce as Gen Z, you might encounter situations where older colleagues unintentionally come across as dismissive. But you have to remember that your reaction holds power. Focus on building bridges, not walls. It’s important to react in a way that demonstrates professionalism and a willingness to learn. By doing so, you can not only navigate these interactions effectively but also challenge preconceptions that older generations tend to have about Gen Z.

You’re not rude, you’re not lazy, and you aren’t unprofessional. And as much as your fellow Gen Z’s might understand your way of communicating, the same can’t be said for older people in the workplace.

The secret is learning how to communicate in a way that suits your environment.
