Why Employer Branding Isn’t Just HR’s Problem

If I were to ask you the top five companies you admire or want to work with, what names come to mind, and why? You can take a pause and answer. Don’t worry, your current employer(s) can’t see your mind.

The reason why those names came to your mind is because you’ve seen them, heard about them, read from them, interacted with people who work with them or talked about them, and this made their name register subconsciously in your mind.

You might also have been fascinated by what they do, why they do what they do, how they do what they do and long to be part of this.

The aggregation of all these factors is what makes up an employer brand.

Employer Branding is the proactive process of positioning your organization as the employer of choice, both for current employees and prospective candidates. It's about defining your company's values, showcasing the culture and fostering a compelling narrative that attracts top talent.

Why does this matter? Well, according to LinkedIn, 88% of job seekers consider an employer's brand reputation before applying for a job. And companies that invest in strong employer branding are three times more likely to make quality hires. Doesn’t that sound like good news to you?

There are many ways to improve your employer branding. A few of them include:

  • Know your company’s unique value proposition and be able to sell them.
  • Leverage employee-generated content (EGC) to tell unique stories
  • Have a career page that sells your mission, vision and highlights your culture.
  • Revisit your recruitment and onboarding process. As I love to say; one of the fastest ways a company can build (or ruin) their employer brand is how they handle their recruitment.
