In his search for better pay to stay afloat in this challenging economy, a young professional sought another job, got it but got laid off the moment he was discovered to still have his old job.
Like that wasn’t enough, he was also laid off immediately from his old job the moment they found out he got a new appointment.
As a company leader, how would you have managed such a situation?

Managing Over-Employed Teams
Having a team working multiple jobs has been a thing since the lockdown.
While some juggled two full-time jobs, others pursued and monetized their passions while keeping a stable income source.
In fact, with inflation on the rise, it is expected that people will do anything they can to survive, even if it means juggling jobs.
I remember sitting at a table of founders sometime ago, and I remember how surprised I was to realize they all knew some of their employees were working multiple jobs - or better put, they would not be surprised to find out.
Thinking back, it’s quite funny how they were just chill about it.
I asked how they handled their over-employed remote teams and I documented my lessons - which is what I’ll be sharing with you today.
These have got to be the most un-cliché hacks to help manage over-employed remote teams, so sit back and enjoy.
1. Have the talk
It’s weird not to find a talent taking up side gigs to meet the demands of their pocket. So have a conversation with them before hiring to relay your expectations.
Some candidates even go as far as including all the jobs they’re working on in their resume - for those, you know what to do. For others, judiciously doing your background check on their LinkedIn profile, and social media may just help you make a decision.
Either way, still have the talk and I’ll say again - emphasize your expectations.
2. Build a system of accountability and ownership
A lack of accountability is detrimental to the team. So regardless of how many gigs your employee is juggling, tolerance for unproductivity should be zero.
Setting goals that encourage accountability needs to be measurable, clear, and challenging.
Several frameworks can help you achieve this, with the top on my list being OKRs, SMART goals, BHAG, BSQ, and a host of others.
While setting goals, let your team members take full responsibility for developing strategies to achieve them and when their tasks, strategies, and goals are set, make them public. Let everyone come to the review meetings showing their tasks and how far they have gone with them.
You can use simple tools to achieve this, such as ClickUp and Peoplebox.
No one wants to come to the team meeting with their goals still at zero - that's embarrassing!
Also, evaluate your team's performance regularly as this helps you measure your growth and outline areas that need improvement.
And finally,
3. Lead with empathy
Your employees have a lot they're dealing with. Especially those in Africa, from the unstable internet connection, living in shared spaces unconducive for work, paying Black Tax, to extremes such as lack of stable electricity.
Their mental health is already hanging on a thin thread, so be empathetic and loving - not in a romantic way but with that genuineness of always wishing people well.
Horrible bosses and managers always get the barest minimum contribution from their staff.
Leading with empathy also means giving people a chance to unleash their creativity, yes, there can be set standards but don’t be dogmatic.

Now back to the story of the young man I shared when we began our conversation; How would you have handled the situation?
I’d love to know, share with me.
CORPORATE TEAMS AND CULTURE
Are Your Employees Resigning Within a Year? Here’s Why:
The hiring process is not a walk in the park. We know that! And great job if you’ve been able to crack that. But there’s some other hurdle to cross, and this may even cost you more than losing talents at the recruitment stage.
There are a number of reasons why employees leave their jobs, especially within a short time of employment, and if it reoccurs, you may be pushed to deal with the notorious imposter syndrome when others stay.
So, despite the perks that drove them to accept your offer in the first instance, why do some employees quit within a year of joining your company?
